Welcome to the Margaret River region in Western Australia! There’s no shortage of fun things to do and see in Margaret River and surrounds, whether it’s your first stay or you’re a regular visitor to the South West.
Check out our list of some of the best places to visit in Margaret River to add to your itinerary:
Caves
It wouldn’t be a trip to Margaret River without visiting at least one of the fantastic caves. Each cave has its own fascinating history, and they’re all worth seeing. The scenic drive along Caves Road offers sights of beautiful trees with plenty of great stops along the way. There is also a great range of Margaret River Tours that feature stops at some of the more impressive caves.
For semi-guided tours, check out Ngilgi Cave or Mammoth Cave, where you can learn about the cave at your own pace through a supplied headset. Jewel Cave and Lake Cave are fully guided, so check the tour times ahead of your arrival so you don’t miss out. Entry into Lake Cave is included in our Indulge and Discover Tour.
Gnarabup Beach
One of the most popular swimming beaches in the area, Gnarabup Beach is certainly worth a stop! Spanning 1.6km to Surfers Point, Gnarabup Beach is a great spot for kids as it is sheltered, offering calm conditions. The invitingly clear water encourages swimming and jetty jumping, and the little ones will love checking out all the shells along the clean sand. Enjoy a coffee and a treat at the renowned White Elephant Cafe after your swim!
For the keen surfers, head a little further along to Surfers Point, the best surfing spot in Margaret River.
Wineries
The Margaret River region is famous for its wineries. With over 200 vineyards, and over 90 cellar doors in the region, there’s ample opportunities for the visiting wine connoisseur (or wine novice!) to sample premium wines.
With so many wineries in the area, it can be hard to choose which to visit. Our wine tours can help here – and will save you from having to allocate a designated driver for the day! Carefully curated to show you a great range of local wineries and delicious cuisines, we have several wine tour packages to suit you. Choose from a half day or full day wine tour, or for those looking for something extra special, our premium wine tours.
Hamelin Bay
The turquoise waters and white sand at Hamelin Bay invite holiday-goers and locals alike all year round. Hamelin Bay is well-known for its teeming marine life, including the stingrays that can be found in the shallows. The stingrays may visit throughout the year, but the best time to stop by is in the summer months for the highest chance of seeing them. Hamelin Bay is particularly popular for snorkelling and fishing.
Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse
The Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean and the coastline of Geographe Bay, making it a popular attraction for visitors to the region. The climb to the top of the lighthouse includes just 59 stairs, making it accessible to those with children.
Learn about the fascinating maritime history of the region through one of the guided tours, which run hourly throughout the day. If you visit on a weekend, be sure to stop in at the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse Cafe for a coffee or bite to eat.
Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
At 39 metres tall, the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia. Located where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet, it’s a great place to see whales between May to September as they make their annual migration.
Guided tours will resume after September 2022, as the lighthouse is currently undergoing important restorations. However, the lighthouse grounds remain open to the public, and the interpretive centre offers a fascinating insight into the history of the lighthouse and the lives of the lighthouse keepers.
Margaret River Fudge Factory
Perfect to satisfy any sweet tooth, the Margaret River Fudge Factory is conveniently located at the top of the main street in Margaret River town. Delight in seeing the process of making the fudge through the large viewing window, and enjoy sampling the different flavours before selecting your favourite.
Fudge is far from being the only sweet on offer – there’s delectable chocolates, nuts and other confectionery, as well as milkshakes and ice-cream to please the whole family.
If sweet treats are your thing, the Margaret River Fudge Factory is one of the stops on our Sweeties Tour!
Busselton Jetty
Busselton is located about 40 minutes from Margaret River, and it’s definitely worth a visit. If you plan on making a day trip out to Busselton, you must see the Busselton Jetty. At 1.84km long, it’s the longest jetty of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and boasts one of only six underwater observatories in the world.
Our two and Three day Extended Charter includes a stop at Busselton Jetty, where you can ride the train to the end of the jetty to enjoy panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, and descend to 8 metres below sea level to the underwater observatory.
Eagles Heritage
Visit one of Australia’s largest wildlife centres dedicated to rehabilitating injured and orphaned birds of prey. Learn about the life and behaviours of eagles, falcons, hawks, and owls when you see them live at the wildlife centre.
Eagles Heritage is a must-see destination for any nature lover and a rare opportunity to see the birds of prey from up close. You can even have your picture taken with a barn owl!
Dolphin Discovery Centre
Located in Bunbury, the Dolphin Discovery Centre is a popular destination where to see dolphins and learn about them. Along with the aquarium found at the centre, you can also choose to feed the dolphins from the seashore.
If you are looking for something extra, then there are 90-minute boat tours that take you to see dolphins and 3-hour ones that let you swim with them. Whatever your choice, you are guaranteed to make long lasting memories.
