Scenic view of Quinninup Falls in Margaret River Region, Western Australia

A guide to Margaret River’s hidden waterfalls!

28 Nov 2022

The Margaret River region, in South West WA, is home to some wonderful hidden spots where to see waterfalls. Ensure you make the most of the gorgeous scenery in and around Margaret River on your next trip to the region.

Here are some hints and tips for seeing the Margaret River waterfalls in all their glory, including the best time to visit and which areas are a must-see.

Yalgardup Falls

Yalgardup Falls is located right near Margaret River and has the added benefit of being easily accessible. The falls are located on Kevill Road, opposite Waterfall Cottages.

While these falls aren’t tall, they are broad and spectacular to see. In full flow during the winter months, you’ll be able to hear the water roaring and rushing away up Margaret River Valley.

If you stay in Margaret River town itself, these falls are so close – just follow Wallcliffe Road to Kevill Road. The falls are close to the road which makes them so accessible (a bonus in the wet winter months, or if you don’t have much time to stop!).

Quinninup Falls

Located on the Cape to Cape track, Quinninup Falls is a beautiful and serene spot in the winter months. It’s a bit of a hike from the carpark on Moses Rock Road to reach the falls, and signs just before Quinninup Beach will point you in the right direction.

Make sure you punch Moses Rock Rd carpark into your GPS instead of the falls themselves, and set out on foot from the carpark to reach the falls. Suitable footwear is a must, and make sure you allow plenty of time for the return trip (around 30-45 minutes each way). Stick to the paths and be mindful of the rocks and loose sand. The track will take you past a lookout, so make sure you’ve got your camera handy!

The waterfall is 10 metres tall and best visited during the winter months if you want to see the falls in full flow. The wildflower season starts in September, which adds even more natural beauty to an already stunning spot. If you visit in summer, the hike is scenic and worth a visit even if the falls aren’t flowing.

Beautiful Qunninup Falls in Margaret River Region, Western Australia

Quinninup Falls have strong cultural significance for the Wadandi people, the traditional owners of the Quinninup land. Make sure you stick to the track and offer respect to this area.

Meekadarabee Falls

Known by the local Indigenous people as the ‘bathing place of the moon’, Meekadarabee Falls is certainly worth a visit. Situated a little further south along the Cape to Cape track, Meekadarabee Falls is close to the restored Ellenbrook Homestead (which is a worthwhile stop in its own right).

The path to the waterfalls is about 2km but is a flat and pleasant trail offering universal access so everyone can enjoy this little slice of paradise. In early spring, the wildflowers make for an especially picturesque walk.

Ironstone Gully

A little further out of Margaret River, halfway between Capel and Donnybrook, is Ironstone Gully. You’ll enjoy a scenic drive along Goodwood Road to the serene forest reserve where you can see the stream meandering through the trees before rushing over the edge of the falls.

This is a beautiful spot in nature to see birdlife and wildflowers in early spring. The picnic area is a great place to enjoy some lunch, or to just stop and enjoy the serenity.

Beedelup Falls

If you venture further out from Margaret River to Pemberton, you’ll find the enchanting Beedelup Falls. The falls are within the Beedelup National Park, and accessed via a short 300m walk from the carpark. Alternatively, take the scenic route through the karri trees on a moderate 4.5km hike.

The best time to visit to see the waterfalls in full flow is from winter to early spring, but surrounded by towering karri trees, this is an extraordinary spot year-round. If you choose to hike the long way, you’ll get views of the expansive lake at Karri Valley Resort.

Fabulous day tour of the Margaret River

"Fabulous day tour of the Margaret River region! Steve was a terrific tour guide and provided us with so much knowledge about the area. The whole day was extremely well organised and we enjoyed each place we visited. The wine tastings were extremely generous and lunch was delicious. We especially enjoyed visiting Vasse Virgin skincare and gourmet foods and the Margaret River Chocolate Factory in the afternoon. This is a great tour if you are limited in time as it gives you a wonderful experience of the Margaret River all in one day. We will definitely be back!"

Amazing family orientated

"This was a fantastic tour. I brought my parents to see this region of WA who are a bit elderly I their 70s, my mother also being a non drinker. But they loved every minute of it, from the coffee in the morning to the wineries and chocolate in the afternoon. The wine tastings just keep coming, so you'll never sober up lol. Also on our trip the group were the most decent diverse ppl from all over the world just looking to have a good time and we all got on so well. I would definitely recommend this trip and for me personally one of the best tours I've been on in my life because of the awesome ppl I met on the tour and Clarice who ran the whole thing. She was an absolute sweety. Cannot recommend this anymore"

Amazing intimate wine tour experience!!

"Fantastic all day wine tour!! Firstly, Clarice was the absolute BOMB!!! So informative about all things wine and the place she calls home. Such a gorgeous person and made everyone on the tour feel relaxed and happy. We never felt rushed at the stops. Saw some amazing family run wineries. All of them incredibly passionate about their craft and you can’t help but get swept up in their journey. Our favorite was Brown Hill winery. Really beautiful wines! We had a great lunch at the Nookery cafe and they even gave us all a complimentary sparkling wine to celebrate our honeymoon! We finished the tour at the West Wings Distillery and tried their amazing gins and vodka (not that we needed more alcohol by then!!). I would highly recommend this great tour. Small and intimate with a great host! Thanks again Clarice!!! 🥰"

Would definitely recommend this tour especially as it was a small group and made it more personal"
